The Shoots Seat
I was approached by a couple who had recently moved into a property in Bowsden. A gnarled old pine had been taken down as it posed a rick of damage to surrounding buildings. The base trunk had a good girth to it due to the three large branches that had grown. From this we designed a seat for sitting in on long summer days, the idea of shoots came about once the seat had been carved. Corrine wanted to utilise the whole of the remaining tree however keeping the back of the seat with its bark, so it was disguised from behind. Corrine liked this idea of shoots knotting upwards, the idea of something new grown from the felling of the tree. This was my first time working in a large section of pine, I was surprised on how tough the timber was after working with lots of Oak and Ash. I was expecting the pine to be a lot softer, the further up I was working up the tree this was the case, however the location of the seat was right in the middle of a crotch for three branches. It was like cutting iron! The seat should last for some time.
